Men holding a drinkSelf medicating with alcohol has been a common practice through the centuries. When speaking of liquor, we are referring to A distilled beverage is a drinkable liquid containing ethyl alcohol (ethanol) that is produced by means of distilling fermented grain, fruit, or vegetables. Spirits are generally known as distilled beverages which contain no sugar such as tequila, vodka, whiskey, gin, brandy, and German schnapps. Distilled beverages with sugar and flavorings would be Grand Marnier, and American schnapps.

"Proof" means the alcohol content of distilled liquors. It is the percentage of alcohol multiplied by two. For example: 50% alcohol = 100-proof and 100% alcohol = 200-proof.

Wine is of course alcohol which in any form affects your nervous system and acts as a tranquilizer and mild anesthetic. Wine comes from fermenting starches and sugars. Nowadays there are all sort of angles touting the benefits of drinking wine. One headline exclaims that red wine counteracts the effects of being fat while another the benefits of anti-aging.

A 5-ounce glass of wine has about the same amount of alcohol as a 1.5 ounce shot of alcohol or a 12-ounce bottle of beer. White wines average about 12% alcohol whereas red wine has 14%. All alcohol is said to have "empty" calories because there are no nutrients such as vitamins or minerals.

Beer is brewed using grains, water and yeast. Barley and wheat are commonly used and if one is stretching for the benefits of drinking beer, one could look at the vitamins and minerals found in these grains along with the yeast or hops. That being said, Alcoholism is one of society's biggest health and social issues.

Red grapes on the vine Resveratrol Connection
There has been some studies done to show that Resveratrol, a chemical produced by certain plants to ward off fungi and bacterial infections, has benefits such as being anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging. Resveratrol can be found in blueberries, cranberries and red grapes, which of course are used to produce wine. Of course one side touts the benefits and another will undermine the study's findings. While moderate intake of wine isn't necessarily bad, it can result in addiction so it may be that if you're looking for the Resveratrol connection, a glass of grape juice just might be more beneficial for you.
